Dear Norreese,
It all happened so fast, the November we learned our 6-year-old daughter, Kiara, had a tumor the size of a golf ball in her brain.
I'm reaching out on the anniversary of Kiara’s diagnosis, because of our gratitude to people like you whose support helps St. Jude Children's Research Hospital save kids’ lives.
I vividly remember that Halloween, carrying Kiara in her cowgirl costume because she said her legs felt too weak. I remember the next day, when we took Kiara to urgent care after she kept falling at the park.
As I wrote in this Perspectives essay for St. Jude Inspire, we began selling most of our stuff, anticipating the costs — the bill submitted to our insurance for her first hospitalization in Arizona had been more than $100,000.
Then, we learned about St. Jude, and obtained a referral because St. Jude had a treatment plan for Kiara's situation.
We learned that because of supporters like you, families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food.
Kiara didn’t speak for nearly three months after surgery, but by that April, through intensive rehabilitation at St. Jude, she was able to once again play with her sister. That was a taste of normalcy, and it was sweet beyond compare.
We feel immense appreciation for the doctors, nurses and scientists at St. Jude who made it possible to save Kiara's life. Yet, we also think of dear friends whose children did not survive — precious lives taken by cancer, families forever changed.
As we move into this season of generosity and
As different as Halloween was for us all this year, my family was reminded of the priceless gift supporters like you help make possible — witnessing our kids, filled with life, just being kids.
With overwhelming gratitude,
Jeremiah Grindrod
